SIBU: Sibu Dayak Sape Club (SDSC) is committed to continuously promoting the ‘sape’ as a musical instrument, particularly in the central zone.

Its pro-tem chairman Anthony Abong said the involvement of youth in taking up the ‘sape’ and the great interest shown is encouraging.

“SDSC consists mostly of young people who love the ‘sape’ very much.  Their spirit shows that our heritage can be preserved,” he said when met on Sunday afternoon at Sibu Heritage Centre.

Earlier, Anthony led more than 20 SDSC members in a busking activity which drew a considerable crowd.

“The turnout has motivated us,” he said.

Anthony said his club, when approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS), will roll out more activities to get more people to play the ‘sape’.

He said SDSC would also organise workshops and classes once approved by the ROS.

“For now, we only have busking sessions to promote SDSC.  We need a certificate to organise bigger scale activities,” he pointed out.

SDSC has a membership of 40 presently.

The busking session last Sunday was supported by Sibu Heritage Centre, Borneo Event Entertainment, Sarawak Tourism Board and Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).
