KUALA LUMPUR: The decision of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) to suspend Tan Sri Annuar Musa as the group’s chairman has nothing to do with his support for the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC).

In fact, Mara interim chairman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob said the suspension was to allow investigation to be carried into the alleged abuse of power in the matters concerning sponsorships for the Kelantan football team, The Red Warriors (TRW).

“The reasons for Mara’s decision to suspend him (Annuar) are mostly related to the issue of sponsorships for The Red Warriors.

“I hope that all parties, including Tan Sri Annuar himself, understand this and that this issue will not get manipulated anymore by any quarters,” he said in a statement yesterday.

According to Dr Yusof, Annuar had also been told not to issue any statements until the investigation by the Mara Internal Audit Committee was completed.

He said the decision to suspend Annuar was a normal process to maintain and enhance public confidence in Mara’s corporate governance.

On Jan 31, Mara suspended Annuar, who is Member of Parliament for Ketereh, as its chairman and chairman of Mara Investment Bhd (PMB) with immediate effect to enable its internal audit division to investigate the issue of sponsorships of PMB and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) for TRW team.

Annuar previously denied any abuse of power in PMB’s and UniKL’s decision to sponsor the Kelantan football team.  — Bernama
