SIBU: Sibu Division outshone other divisions in the state in last year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations with an average school grade (GPS) of 4.24.

Sibu divisional education officer Wong Chung Kung said this showed an improvement of 0.29 compared to GPS of 4.53 in the previous year.

According to him, a total of 2,987 (89 per cent) out of 3,419 candidates from 23 secondary schools, including Vocational College Sibu and SMK Agama Sibu, were eligible to receive the certificate.

“A total of 149 candidates or 4.44 per cent obtained A’s in all subjects compared to 141 candidates last year. Out of that, a student from SMK St Elizabeth, Erica Ling Kai Shi who obtained 11A+s emerged as the best student in the state,” he said at a press conference yesterday.

According to Wong, seven schools obtained GPS scores below 4.00. They are SMK St Elizabeth, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Methodist, SMK Tiong Hing, SMK Bandar Sibu, SMK Deshon and SMK Kwong Hua.

He said SMK Methodist had the highest number of students getting A’s (A+, A, and A-) in all subjects, with 45 students, followed by SMK St Elizabeth with 27 students and SMK Sacred Heart with 18 students.

For SMK Agama Sibu, 100 per cent of its candidates were eligible to receive the certificate.

The school obtained GPS of 3.25 compared to last year’s 3.49.

One of its students, Clement Hii, who obtained 11A’s, said he was not surprised with the result as he had worked hard for it.

He said his mother sacrificed a lot while he was preparing for the exam.

“My mother helped in the study plan and if there were things that I did not understand, she would do the revision with me,” he said, adding his mother also made sure that he would get the nutrition he needed while he worked hard for the examination.

Apart from that, his friends from church had encouraged him a lot.

“The commitment by the teachers also touched me and encouraged me to do well,” he added.

Another student, Jeremy Sia, who also obtained 11A’s, said he was surprised with the result, but added he tried his best.

“I plan to study medicine,” he said.

Other 11A’s students in SMK Sacred Heart include Jacky Cheng, Denson Pau, Colin Kiu, and Gary Ngu.

Those who obtained 10A’s were Alex Lee, Chan Liang Wen, Jonathan Tiong, Lu King Hung, Frederick Tieh, Anselm Kiu, Jackie Tiong, Lim Kien Liang, Adam Tiong, Nicholas Tuh and Chua Teck Hua.
