However, it was later determined the remains were those of 12-year-old Muhammad Iskandar Shah Abdullah, he told reporters here yesterday.

In the incident which occurred about 5pm, eight children were fishing in the river before they were swept away by strong water currents.

While one of them was believed to have swam to safety, the bodies of five children were found.

The five were identified as Shahrizat Abdullah, 12; Shahrizwan Abdullah, 10; Amirul Hakimi Khairul Amru, nine; Muhammad Aiman Fitri Md Asmadi, 12; and Muhammad Iskandar Shah.

Supramaniam said an ongoing search and rescue mission to locate Muhammad Ikhwan and Muhammad Aiman, involved

the fire and rescue department and Civil Defence Force personnel.

Elaborating, he said following a heavy downpour, there was a sudden gush of water in the river, raising its level to almost five metres.

“Normally, the water level in the river is shallow and children are known to play there,” he added.

Meanwhile, three of the victims were buried at the Bukit Beruntung Cemetery here about noon yesterday.

Earlier, a prayer ceremony for Amirul Hakimi, Shahrizat and Shahrizwan was held at Surau Ali Bashah, Persiaran Bunga Raya.
