MIRI: Miri Blood Bank is short of blood groups A and O; thus it is calling on healthy members of the public to come forward to donate their blood.
The bank’s public relations officer, Kenneth Numan, said the shortage is due to many patients needing type A for blood transfusion, adding on average 30 pints are needed daily.
“We have an acute shortage of group A and thus when there is no stock available we have to use group O and this resulted in low stock for group O too.
“Thus I appeal to healthy Mirians and visitors to generously donate their blood to rescue the life of those urgently needing blood transfusion,” Kenneth told The Borneo Post yesterday.
He said for immediate blood donation, they should come to the blood bank’s office at Miri Hospital during office hours.
The opening hours are 8.30am to 12.15pm and 2.30pm to 4.15pm on Mondays to Thursdays, and 8.30pm to 11am and 2.30pm to 4.15pm on Fridays.
Meanwhile, members of the public can also donate blood during the upcoming blood donation campaigns organised jointly by the blood bank and two establishments.
“On Saturday, the bank’s mobile unit will be at Samling Doyon in Kuala Baram from 9am to 1pm and on Sunday at Bintang Megamall from 9.30am to 2pm,” Kenneth said.
Donors are required to have more than five hours of sleep to avoid getting rejected and must not be on medication and their last date of donating is more than three months ago.
They also need to stay clear of any alcohol at least a day before donating.
