Race track to be built at KKIP

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) will be developing a piece ot its land into a kilometre race track for drag car racing.

This was revealed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Raymond Tan Shu Kiah yesterday in a press conference after launching the Thailand-Sabah Business Matching and Networking 2017 at Hyatt Regency here yesterday.

“We will be using a small piece of land to develop Autocity in KKIP for this race track, but it is not like the Formula One track.

“The reason why we want to develop this race track project is that there are so many people who love to race and they are doing it everywhere. It is not good.

“With this race track, we will bring safety to the drivers. In the same time, we can build support industry in the Autocity, such as parts supply, lubricant and so on. I believe our ready built factory nearby would complement this particular project,” he said.

Tan, who is also the Minister of Industrial Development, said the government had already come out with the project plan that it learned from Thailand.

“With the existence of this Autocity, we will encourage enthusiasts into tour-racing. Hopefully, at the same time it will bring all the suppliers, cars, accessories and support vendors in the same place.

“However, we have to be more careful because when we design the race track, we need 100 per cent safety measures.

“I would be working with KKIP on how we can quicken the process, and with our friends from Thailand here, I hope they will spend some time to see the Autocity plan so that they can come more often,” he added.
