KUCHING: More than 1,000 badminton fans wishing to watch the dream final of the Malaysia Open men’s singles between world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei and two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan turned up as early as 1am to queue for the tickets at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium yesterday.

As the crowd grew by the hour, more policemen and Rela personnel were assigned to manage the swelling numbers.

It was learnt that besides local fans, there were also others flying into Kuching from China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and other countries to watch the two arch rivals in action.

Ticket counters were open at 10am and all the 500 tickets reserved for the finals were snapped up within half an hour.

Upon learning that there were no more tickets available, some die-hard fans became emotional and vented their frustration by arguing with ticket sellers and other fans, causing a near commotion which was stopped by the policemen and Rela personnel.

For the disappointed fans, they had no alternative but to watch the action on the giant screens at the Stadium square and Sarawak Aquatic Centre.
