DHAKA, Bangladesh: The government of Bangladesh welcomes investments and cooperation in the field of fisheries and livestock from Sarawak.

This was mentioned by Bangladesh’s Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Muhammed Sayedul Hoque after meeting a trade mission delegation from the state here on Sunday.

He said his country is the fourth largest inland freshwater producer in the world, and it also exports beef to other countries.

“Bangladesh government is ready to cooperate with you, to help. We welcome you to work together with Bangladesh,” he said.

The delegation’s honorary leader Assistant Minister for Agriculture Malcolm Mussen Lamoh had earlier told the meeting about Sarawak’s interest in the field of aquaculture.

He had also told them about Sarawak having to import beef and dairy products to meet local demand.

The meeting at the ministry’s office had also attracted the local media fraternity as they came to do coverage of the event.

Also present were senior officers of departments and agencies under the ministry.

Mussen, who is Batang Ai assemblyman, said the Sarawak government had initiated a move towards digital economy — a new approach to expand its market base.

“This means that we can cooperate with producers from outside, and use IT (information technology) to expand market outside Malaysia,” he said.

The meeting with Bangladesh’s Minister of Fisheries and Livestock was part of the itinerary of the seven-day trade mission organised by Kuching Chinese General Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCGCCI).

Apart from members of KCGCCI, the delegation also comprises members of Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Sarawak Housing and Real Estate Developers Association (Sheda) Kuching Branch.

Earlier on Sunday, the 34-member delegation had a meeting with Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) under the Prime Minister’s Office.

The meeting, chaired by Bida additional secretary Nabhash Chandra Mandal, provided the delegates with the knowledge they would need to know on investment opportunities in Bangladesh and incentives made available for investors.

On behalf of Sarawak government and the delegation, Mussen said they were very encouraged by the briefing given by Bida and impressed by the Bangladesh government’s mission to transfrom the country towards becoming a middle income economy by 2021.

After lunch, the delegation visited the food processing facility owned by Well Food Company outside Dhaka city centre.
