MIRI: The power outage on the evening of April 7, 8 and 9 at Luak Bay up to Bakam area here was caused by overloading of the transformer.

To ensure that the problem does not recur, Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) is currently doing the reconstruction of one of the transformers at Luak Bay.

This was disclosed by Assistant Minister for Land and Air Transport and Safety Datuk Lee Kim Shin, who said he was contacted by SEB northern region manager Tan Joo Kok during the power outage.

“He (Tan) said they have already taken action and have shifted the transformer to Marina Bay which should be ready within two days,” Lee said at a press conference after a briefing on package 11 of the Pan Borneo Highway project at Public Works Department (JKR) office here yesterday.

According to Tan, who also attended the press conference, the major breakdown was rather unusual in Miri.

“The affected areas are developing quite rapidly thus we have overlooked the significant increase in the load and we are doing our best as now our men are still monitoring the loading all the way,” he said, while extending his sincere apology to residents of the affected areas for the inconvenience caused.

And in order to provide better supply to the area, SEB had acquired a land in Bakam area to build a new substation in 2018, Tan added.

“Miri is having a lot of reconstruction for this year, so I hope the public will bear with us if there is any outage and hopefully everything will be better after end of this year,” he said.
