KUCHING: A labourer was sentenced to five years’ jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday for abusing his biological daughter – by pouring hot water on her.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad handed down the sentence to Norizan Edi, 43, after he was found guilty of committing the offence at his house in Semariang,  Petra Jaya, about 4pm on Feb 16, 2015.

On Tuesday, the judge ruled that Norizan’s defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.

Yesterday, prior to the sentencing, the father-of-eight appealed for a lenient sentence saying he was the sole breadwinner of the family. In mitigation made through his counsel Hani Iryani, he said all his children were still schooling with the eldest one in college.

DPP Haresh Prakash urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence on the accused.  Norizan’s family, who was with him throughout the proceeding, were all in tears upon learning of the sentence.

His wife and relatives were seen kissing his hands while saying goodbye as he was led to the temporary court room by policemen before being sent to prison to serve the sentence.
