Man dies after attack by group of assailants

SIBU: A 29-year old businessman was killed in an alleged fight with a group of men outside a business premises in Wong King Huo Lane 3B here at about 1am yesterday.

He was attacked with wooden and metal rods and seriously injured. He was sent to a private medical centre in Pedada Road and later referred to Sibu Hospital where he died about 5am.

Prior to the incident, the victim was having drink at a coffee shop nearby with his friends when two men in their 20s showed up.

An argument between him and one other man ensued. The argument is said to have been sparked over misunderstanding in social media postings.

The suspect is believed to have called a group of about 10 men who were armed with wooden and iron objects. They allegedly attacked the victim and his friends.

It is said that the victim and his friends ran until they were surrounded by the attackers at a five-foot-way of a shop about 200 metres from the coffee shop. The victim fainted while his friends suffered injuries in their attempt to stop the attack on the victim.

Sibu police chief ACP Saiful Bahri Abdullah said a team of police forensics from Kuching arrived in Sibu yesterday afternoon to assist in the investigation.
