KOTA KINABALU: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) yesterday signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) with chartered accounting firm P.S. Yap, Isma & Associates to further strengthen cooperation, co-ordination and information sharing, particularly in academic and campus-based industrial training.

UMS vice chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah said the MoA was an important step towards increasing the level of coordination and cooperation between UMS and P.S. Yap, Isma & Associates, outlining cooperation in a number of matters including academic cooperation and industrial training for accounting students and lecturers.

He added that the cooperation would ensure the best development collaboration, particularly in terms of academics, enhancing graduate employability and meeting the target set by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) for lecturers in accounting to have industrial experience of at least 12 months.

UMS had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with P.S. Yap, Isma and Associates on May 19, 2015, and the latter had commenced its operations at the campus by establishing the firm’s office, called “Business Solutions@UMS”, situated at Level 1 of the Business, Economics and Accountancy Faculty in UMS.

Since 2015, the firm has trained a total of 48 UMS accounting students for training periods ranging from two to six months.

“Currently, 10 UMS accounting graduates are pursuing an accounting career with the firm,” said Mohd Harun.

Representing the firm at the event yesterday was the firm’s senior partner, Dato Yap Pian Seen.
