JPJ says no demerit points for beating amber light

PUTRAJAYA: The Road  Transport Department  (JPJ) has clarified that there are no demerit points  for driving through when the traffic light is amber.

The Department in a statement here yesterday said the  KEJARA demerit points system only involved beating the red light and speeding.

The statement was in response to social media going abuzz that drivers will be penalised points under the system if they beat the amber light.

Under the KEJARA system, which came into force on April 15, drivers risk having their licence suspended or even banned from driving if they chalk up a certain number of points.

It started off  by clamping down on two offences – speeding and beating the red light, with more offences to be added to the demerit list.

The department further denied that 400 Automatic Enforcement System (AES) cameras will be installed nationwide.

It said currently there were 14 such cameras and that the number would only be increased from time to time and advised the public not to be easily taken in by what was said on social media but instead refer to the authorities to get the correct information. —Bernama
