Overwhelming 110 entries for Kuching Closed squash

KUCHING: The Squash Association of Kuching (SAK) is organising the Kuching Closed squash tournament at the Sarawak Squash Centre in Petra Jaya this weekend.

Organising chairman Sim Chin Kheng, who is SAK president and Squash Racquets Association of Sarawak (SRAS) vice president, said the response to the tournament was overwhelming, with 110 entries, out of which 100 are juniors aged seven to 20.

“The competition is part of our junior development programme to scout for new talents,” said Sim of the objective of the event which is open to players based in Kuching and Samarahan only.

Other objectives are to promote squash in Kuching, providing the young players a platform to display their skills and selecting players for the state level competition.

According to him there are seven categories to be competed namely Grass Roots 1 (mixed boys and girls), Grass Roots 2 (mixed boys and girls), Division 1 (mixed boys and girls), Division 2 (mixed boys and girls), Premier (mixed boys and girls), Men’s Open and Doubles (subject to selection).

All age groups will be played based on the Swiss/Circuit Draw where players will play until the final day for placing.
