State duo set for Asian junior wushu c’ship

KUCHING: Two athletes from Sarawak have been selected to represent Malaysia at the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Incheon, South Korea from Sept 14 to 26.

They are Sukma medallist Lee Hui Xian and KPM Wushu Championship 2017 gold medallist Edwin Wong Sing Yew.

Hui Xian will compete in the Girls Group A nanquan, nandao and nangun while Sing Yew will be competing in the Boys Group C changquan, jianshu and qiangshu.

“The duo were selected based on their good performance in the Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) Wushu Championship in Kuala Lumpur from March 24-26,” said Wushu Federation of Sarawak secretary William Kong.

Sing Yew won gold in the Boys C changquan and jianshu and was named the best boy athlete in the primary schools category while Hui Xian won the Girls A nandao gold, nangun silver and nanquan bronze.

They helped the Sarawak team win six gold, five silver, four bronze medals and seven fourth placings to be placed third overall behind Malacca and Penang.

“I believe they can give a good account of themselves in their debut appearance at the Asian junior meet and bring glory and honour not only to Sarawak but also Malaysia.

“WFS is also proud to be able to continuously produce athletes for the country,” Kong who is also secretary of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) said, adding that the duo are to report to Bukit Jalil for centralised training from Aug 31 to Sept 13.

Besides Hui Xian and Sing Yew, Sukma XVIII medallist Stephanie Ngu Cai Ern is also named among the four reserves in the national junior squad.

Also making the national junior squad are six athletes from Malacca, two from Penang and one each from Sabah, Johor, Selangor and Pahang.

The last time Sarawak had representatives in the national squad for the Asian Junior

Wushu Championship were Yong Arifah Khairul Kok and Felicia Ma Hui Qi in Manila, Philippines in 2013.

Other athletes who have competed and won medals at the Asian junior meet include Elvic Bong Qian Zheng, Clement Thian Fung Seng, Audrey Chan Yee Jo and Fu Wen Jie.
