Science student with a passion for fine arts

IT is common for science stream students to explore their career potential in the field of technology development, related especially to engineering and maths. But this apparently does not apply to Putery Dania Roslan, who is doing science in school but has her heart set on fine arts.

The 18-year-old from Taman Piasau Indah, Miri, said her interest in drawing was first kindled by the estate blueprint her father brought home. At that time, drawing was only a hobby as she had to concentrate on her science subjects.

When she was in Form 3, Dania, the youngest in the family, started to take a keen interest in drawing. Being in the science stream did not stop her from continuing to explore her potential in fine arts.

“I’ve not received any proper training. I learned to draw by myself mostly via YouTube. I kept practising until I found my own style,” she told thesundaypost.

At first, Dania’s mum, Dayang Mardinah Awang Daud, thought drawing was something her daughter did only during her free time. So when Dania showed her first drawing to her mum and her sister, they were sceptical because they thought the standard of the drawing was too high for her.

To prove she had a talent for drawing, Dania came up another piece similar to the first one she showed her mum and her sister. This time around, they were taken aback by her drawing skills, especially her mum who was lost for words at the high standard of Dania’s work.

Since then, her mum has been very supportive of Dania’s artistic pursuits and wants her to fully explore her talents in fine arts.

Oil and acrylic

Dania’s techniques are more suited to oil and acrylic painting. Landscape and abstract subjects are her forte.

“I have shared my drawings on Facebook and received many queries from the public as well as friends from overseas.

“Apart from doing my own drawings, I also draw for people on request,” she said.

The happiest moment for her is when people appreciate her talents and buy her artworks.

“I put all my heart into my drawings. And I get a lot of satisfaction from seeing my drawings displayed at people’s homes,” she added.

Last year, she took part in an art exhibition themed ‘Arts In Me’, organised by the Miri Malay Association (PMM) in collaboration with Pustaka Miri and Miri City Council (MCC). She said as a newbie, the exhibition was the best platform for her to show her talents.

Dania said she still has a lot to learn. She thanked her family, friends and teachers for giving her their moral support and encouragement to pursue fine arts in university.

And like other fine art artists, she aspires to set up her own gallery studio one day.

“My future is very clear — to be a lecturer and to pursue my passion for drawing, and needless to say, having my own studio will definitely help to accomplish my goal in fine arts.”
