Gilbert claims both titles in Kuching tennis tourney

KUCHING: Former Sukma player Gilbert Yeo beat Sukma player Alvin Teng 6-4, 6-1 in the men’s singles final at the Kuching Closed Tennis Tournament at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association Tennis Centre last Sunday.

In the singles competition that saw 20 participants, Gilbert received a first-round bye before blanking Patrick Siqueen 6-0, 6-0 in the second round, Mark Leong 6-2, 6-1 in the last eight and Mitchel Brapui 6-6, 6-1 in the semi-finals.

Gilbert completed a double when he partnered Shawn Lee as the top seeded pair to tame fourth seeds Kelvin Chong-Galvin Yeo 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the eight-pair men’s doubles competition.

The losing semi-finalists were second seeds Alvin Teng-Rohaizat Achop and third seeds Zaki Pauzi-Raymond Agan.

This competition was organised by the Kuching Division Lawn Tennis Association to select players to represent Kuching in the Sarawak Inter-Division and Sarawak Closed in Miri from Apr 28 to May 1.
