KUCHING: The High Court here yesterday sentenced two labourers to death for the murder of businessman Hii Nek Kah in Matang two years ago.

Justice Stephen Chung found Mohd Nazarie Halidi, 25, from Kampung Semerah Padi, and Suffry Empi, 28, from Jalan Sentosa, Sibu guilty after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case against each of the two accused beyond reasonable doubt.

Both men appeared calm when the decision was handed down and remained so while they were escorted out of the court room.

A total of 18 prosecution witnesses were called while only both accused gave their statements in defence.

Lawyers CM Sundram and Fung Lee Fook represented the two accused while DPP Musli Abdul Hamid prosecuted.

Mohd Nazarie and Suffry murdered Hii, 68, in his house at Mile 13 Jalan Matang on Jan 30, 2015 between 9pm and 11pm.

They used a stick to hit Hii on the neck and head, leaving him sprawled on the ground in a pool of blood.

Both accused were detained the same day after they were spotted travelling in a Toyota Prado belonging to the deceased at Main Bazaar.

Mohd Nazarie and Suffry had been hired as daily-paid workers to renovate a house that Hii had planned to turn into a homestay facility.
