KUCHING: A man and a teenager were arrested in Batu Kawah on Wednesday night after a routine police inspection found them driving a stolen multi-purpose vehicle (MPV).

The suspects, a 32-year-old from Engkelili and a 17-year-old from Miri, were spotted behaving suspiciously and subsequently approached by personnel from Padawan Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) in front of a pharmacy at Kuching City Mall around 7.50pm. An inspection of the MPV they were driving showed that its licence plate number was registered for a pickup.

When contacted yesterday, Padawan deputy district police chief DSP Merbin Lisa confirmed the arrests, revealing that the MPV had been stolen in Miri last year.

“Upon discovering the vehicle had been fitted with false licence plates, the URB personnel checked and found that it had been reported stolen in Lutong on June 2, 2016,” he said.

The two suspects were arrested on the spot and placed in the police lockup pending further investigation.

In an unrelated case, a music teacher lodged a police report after her house at Jalan Wan Alwi was broken into by burglars yesterday morning. The incident was discovered around 7.30am when the complainant, in her 30s, arrived home to find that the security grill of one of her kitchen windows had been forced open.

A detailed inspection of ransacked rooms in the house revealed the perpetrators had carted away several pieces of gold jewellery, more than half a dozen wristwatches, a projector unit and personal documents. Police are investigating the break-in.
