KUCHING: A 25-year-old man was sentenced to death by hanging at the High Court here yesterday after being found guilty of trafficking in 801.4g of cannabis last year.
Justice Dato’ Rhodzariah Bujang imposed the sentence on Regoanal Awing alias Rickynold Igai after she was satisfied the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 39B(2) of the same Act which carries the mandatory death penalty.
The prosecution presented six witnesses, including the police raiding team and postal clerk, while the defence had one witness during the trial.
The accused, an assistant mechanic, committed the offence at a post office at Jalan Song here at about 9am on Jan 6 last year.
He was collared by police while collecting a parcel from the post office.
Lawyer Fung Lee Fook represented the accused while DPP Mohd Fillany Siji, who stood in for DPP Hayda Faridzal, prosecuted.
