SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) waltzed into the Malaysia Book of Records today by breaking the record for the most remote control race boats in a single event.

Sibu broke the previous record of 522 boats in 2015, held by Melaka, with an entry of 614 boats this year.

SMC deputy general manager Mohammad Alex Edward confirmed the record-breaking feat this morning.

“I would like to announce that SMC together with the Sibu Remote Control Sports Club is listed in the Malaysia Book of Record with the most remote control race boats in a single event,” he said.

After announcing the achievement, he presented the certificate to SMC chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King, witnessed by Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.

A total of 169 participants from seven countries including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Dubai, United States of America and Malaysia participated in the boat races.

The event was held in conjunction with Visit Sibu Year 2017 at the Permai Lake Garden, and will continue until Sunday.
