KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Family Wellbeing Index (IKK) for year 2017 at Kampung Asajaya averages 7.21 out of a maximum of 10.

Conducted from March last year, the IKK study involves 400 respondents who are either parents or villagers living in three villages: Kampung Asajaya Hulu, Kampung Asajaya Tengah and Kampung Asajaya Laut.

According to Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim, the study measures the wellbeing of families at the three villages based on eight aspects and domain.

The eight domains are family relationship, family and community, family economy, safety, family health, family and religion, housing and environment, and family and communications technology.

“Out of the eight domains, the domains that recorded the lowest rating are namely housing and environment, and family and communications technology. The study also shows that there are three social issues which needs urgent attention in the area: teenagers who smoke (43.5 per cent), skip school (13 per cent) and gamble (13 per cent),” she added in her speech during the launching ceremony of the Family and Community Empowerment (FACE) programme organised by her ministry at Asajaya Sports Complex yesterday.

Thus she hopes that those responsible will take serious action and follow-up such as organising programmes in the form of the National Blue Ocean Strategy to curb the three social issues plaguing the area.

On local needs, Rohani mentioned that there are three things which need attention such as clean water supply (26.5 per cent), garbage collection (16.8 per cent) and public transport (13.5 per cent).

She also revealed that the three Asajaya villages are the 16th community selected for the implementation of the FACE programme, out of 19 selected communities throughout the country.

“FACE was introduced to focus on family and community empowerment as a step to develop local family and community strengthening. The life of the community in Asajaya has changed through the years, especially in terms of infrastructure and basic facilities,” she said.

One example of how Asajaya has changed is that the area once known for its ‘flying toilets’ has been developed by the government.

Also present during the ceremony were Youth and Sports Assistant Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang, Samarahan Division Resident Ibrahim Lumpu and Asajaya District Officer Habari Bakar.
