MIRI: An Indonesian man suffered a broken rib after being beaten by members of the public for allegedly attempting to rape a 12-year-old minor with special needs in Pujut Tanjong Batu, near here, on Sunday.

It is learnt that the suspect had gone to the victim’s house prior to the incident and lured the victim to her family’s car parked at the front of their house.

He allegedly tied the victim, who has Down’s Syndrome, using the car’s seatbelt before unzipping her pants.

Fortunately for the victim, a neighbour happened to see the incident and immediately came to the girl’s rescue.

Angered by the incident, several members of the public beat up the suspect before handing him over to the police.

The foreigner was then taken to Miri Hospital in an ambulance for treatment of a broken rib sustained during the beating.

Miri deputy district police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit confirmed the case when contacted, saying the suspect will be remanded once he is discharged from hospital.

Police are investigating the case under Section 376/511 of the Penal Code for attempted rape.
