SIBU: Sibu Goldies outgunned defending champion Sibu Swan 31-10 to lift the Bernard Ting-Allan Richard Wan-Moh Ung Bing 15-aside Rugby Memorial Cup at SMK Sacred Heart Rugby Field over the weekend.

Powered by veteran Fijian Iowane Sovatabua, they proved too hot for Sibu Swan to handle as they went ahead 15-0 by half-time.

Sibu Swan tried valiantly but two tries coming in the dying minutes was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Miri Division Rugby Union edged Mukah Swiflets 17-7 to win the Plate.

A record 12 teams took part in this third edition of the annual tournament organised by Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) to commemorate the three former rugby stalwarts.

SDRU chief coach Michael Ting expressed relief over the big number of teams for the tournament.

Only four teams took part last year.

“It’s good in a way as it help to popularize the sport but, on the other hand, a big number of teams mean more time and preparations are needed to organise the game smoothly and effectively,” Ting said.

The other competing teams were Bintulu Division Rugby Club, Betong Division Rugby Club, Sarawak Police, First Division Army Team I and II and Borneo Wanderers, Kolej Vokasional Sibu and SMK Sacred Heart.
