Korean snorkeler drowns at Mamutik Island

KOTA KINABALU: A Korean man who was on a holiday in the state capital with his family drowned while snorkeling at Mamutik Island on Wednesday.

The body of Shim Jae Sun, 48, was found floating along mid reef behind the island by a scuba diver around 3pm.

Acting city police chief Superintendent George Abd Rakman said the victim’s body was taken to the marine jetty before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH I).

“Initial police investigation found no foul play was involved in the case,” he said, adding that a thorough investigation was still being carried out by forensic.

George also said that the victim had left the Tanjung Aru Marina jetty with his family around 1pm for snorkeling at Memutik Island.

Police have classified the case as sudden death.
