KUCHING: Sarawak created a new Guinness World Records for the largest crowd of people dressed in cat costumes at Kuching Amphitheatre, Jalan Taman Budaya here, yesterday.
According to Guinness World Records adjudicator Hoda Khachab to create the record, there must be at least 250 people dressing up in cat costumes gathered for at least five minutes.
“For the largest people gathering dressed as cats, Asean International Film Festival and Awards was able to achieve 440 people,” she announced.
The event saw the participants gathered at the amphitheatre as early as 4pm and the adjudication started at 6pm.
Although the participants mainly were youths, there were also young children and adults gleefully donning cat costumes. Few participants were seen turned away by the adjudicator as they did not meet the requirements.
Only those who came dressed in full cat costumes with matching ears, tail and an outfit covering the body, arms and legs and whiskers painted on the face were deemed qualified.
The world record attempt was held in conjunction with Aiffa 2017. Those who were approved by the adjudicator received an exclusive Guinness World Records t-shirt each.
Aside from that, the World Longest Rotan Mat that was rolled out at the Kuching Amphitheatre made two loops around the Amphitheatre, the masterpiece will be showcased until today (May 5) for locals and visitors to view.
The 1128.272 metre long and 28 inch wide mat produced in Sarawak using 1.4 tonnes of rotan woven by some 400 Orang Ulu master weavers from Baram, Murum and Belaga had made it into the Guinness World Records in 2016. It beat the last record by 330 metres.
The record certificate was presented by the organising chairperson Datin Debong Anyi for the committee of the longest woven mat to Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg who was represented by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Uggah also officiated at AIFFA 2017 by cutting a ribbon to release a giant red balloon into the air last night.

The opening night included appearances of Singapore comedian Phua Chu Kang, Upin & Ipin mascots, Dayang Nurfaizah and Datuk David Arumugam of Alleycats. Asian and Hollywood’s favourite martial arts hero Donnie Yen will make his first appearance at this year AIFFA as well.
This is the third year Kuching is playing host to AIFFA during which awards will be given in 16 categories to recognise the contributions of directors, directors of photography, actors, writers and editors as well as for lifetime achievement and inspirations.
