MIRI: It was a ‘bright red affair’ here yesterday as some 600 hashers gathered for the ‘Red Dress Charity Run’, held in conjunction with Miri 3000 Run Celebration 2017.

The event, run by Miri Hash House Harriers (HHH) with the route starting from Miri City Fan and ended at Miri Marina Bay, involved participants from various local and foreign hash running clubs – some coming from as far as Japan and Western Australia.

According to Miri HHH grandmaster Chong Mai King, the majority of the runners are those from Peninsular Malaysia.

“The Red Dress Charity Run kicks off the three-day Miri 3000 Run Celebration this year, to be followed by the main event ‘3000 Run’ beginning at the Borneo Tropical Rainforest Resort tomorrow (today – May 6) and ending with Hangover Run at Canada Hill.”

Chong further said the objective of the Red Dress Charity Run was to raise funds, which would be channelled to local charity homes.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting flagged off the participants for the 5km run heading to Marina Bay, where the ‘Red Dress Run Party’ was held later.

Ting, in his remarks, was delighted to see many hashers coming to the city to enliven the event and make the charity run a success.

“I understand that the main purpose of hosting this event is to create awareness of the importance of health and exercise among our fellow Mirians.

“Miri HHH often participates in runs and events around the world and the same goes for hashers from other countries as well. It is a healthy exchange of culture and friendship.”

Ting also believed that activities run by Miri HHH would be able to promote many places of interest in Sarawak as well as activities such as jungle trekking and mountaineering to their counterparts from other countries.

“I can see that from this charity run, all the hashers are like family – there is no discrimination between them; they also do not see the differences in age, gender and race.”

Later, Ting pledged a donation of RM10,000 for the charity event.
