KUCHING: Team Work Garage (TWG) triumphed at the Terengganu International Drag battle recently, winning the Turbocharged Open title in a record-breaking time of 9.40secs at the newly-opened racing strip in Kuala Terengganu.

According to driver Ismail Ibrahim, the Kuching-based TWG was the only team from Sarawak at the event and to win the much-coveted Turbocharged Open title.

“We started preparing three months before the event and we knew it will be tough as we were facing teams from throughout Malaysia for the ‘King of the Kings’ title,” said Ismail when contacted by The Borneo Post.

“We had our machine upgraded which now has over 1,000 Horsepower. The machine performed well but I am sure that it can be pushed further to reach the eight second bracket,” said Ismail.

However, the run proved costly after he crashed in the final lap due to brake failure, and the machine had undergone repairs to get it back on the track, he explained.

“TWG have invested heavily on sending the team to compete outside the state. We want to show that Sarawak have talented racers and teams.

“What we lack is a proper facility,” Ismail said.

“We also believed that local teams here are on par with our counterparts in the peninsula,” he stressed.

Ismail added that TWG is considering competing in a much tougher race, probably in Bangkok or Songkla in Thailand.

He also said that the team would continue to upgrade the car, a Mitsubishi-powered Proton Wira, to ensure that it could compete with top and well-established teams in the future.
