KUCHING: Sarawak Sports Corporation chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee attended the 3rd Malaysian Sports Psychology Conference at the Sports Centre of the University of Malaya (UM) from May 9 as an invited guest.

The conference organised by Sports Centre, UM in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education and Health, Institute of Teacher Education Tun Abdul Razak Campus (IPGKTAR) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) attracted over 230 local and foreign participants.

It was sanctioned by the Malaysian Sport Psychology Association (MASPA) and endorsed by the Asian South Pacific Association of Sport Psychology (ASPASP).

Ong was pleased with the unique set-up which enabled delegates to listen to a series of talks and workshops from leading sports psychology practitioners and researchers, and were able to network across the sports psychology communities internationally.

He thanked the chairman Dr Lim Boon Hooi (UM), Dr Chin Ngien Siong and IPGKTAR for their collaboration with UM and USM in organising the conference.

He also commended Chin for being appointed as the Malaysian representative for ASPASP by Prof Dr Kim Young-Ho, the secretary of ASPASP during the conference.

The role of ASPASP is to facilitate the development of sports psychology throughout the  whole of Asia, Australasia and the South Pacific Islands.

Kim, who is from the Seoul National University of Science and Technology, was the keynote speaker while Chin was one of the invited speakers at the conference.

Ong added that there will be a Sports Science Symposium at the end of this year and SSC and IPGKTAR will organise the 5th International Seminar on Sports and Exercise Psychology next year under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

Under the Ministry’s Key Result Area (KRA) 6, educating the coaches and athletes through continuing coaching education such as sports science courses, seminars and conferences is one of the most important aspects to develop and maintain high coaching standard and to ensure that the athletes develop to their full potential.
