MIRI: The King Archery club here won seven gold, four silver and two bronze medals at the recent 18th Sarawak Outdoor Archery Championship held at Kidurong Club in Bintulu from May 5 to 8.

Coach David Ting said the club sent 10 archers to the championship and surprisingly two novice archers, Emily Moh Xian Yi and Jayce Kho Guan Khai who both only started taking up archery six months ago won the most medals.

“Within six months, Emily could win golds in the 30m, 20m and overall, while Jayce won gold in 30m and silver in 20m and overall. This is awesome and their results are testimonies that with effective and systematic training plus commitment by the players, one can excel in archery,” said Ting yesterday.

The other gold medallists were Lee Siaw Jing who won the Individual Olympic Round, Brian Ting Tiew Heng – in Ranking Round while both of them collected gold in the Mix Team.

Lee Siaw Jing also won two silver in the Ranking Round and Team Event while Brian Ting Tiew won the bronze in the Individual Oylmpic Round and also bronze in the team event with Wong Chiong Jung and Jason Kho Guan Seng.

“With only 10 archers competing winning seven gold, four silver and two bronze was indeed a great achievement although we don’t win the challenge trophy – which was won by team having the most points from team event.

“The trophy was won by another archery club from Miri – X-Tune Archery Club,” said Ting, who is also the president of the Miri Archery Association.

A total of 11 teams comprising 95 archers took part in the competition.

Six categories were contested in the championship, a platform to select 10 best archers to represent Sarawak for Sukma.

The four-day championship was closed by the Bintulu Resident Muhamad Yakup Kari.

Also present was Bintulu Division Archery Association president Datuk Pui Kian Onn who was the organising chairman, and the Sarawak Archery Association secretary general Chong Yap Jin.
