Lorry plunges into ravine killing driver

KUNAK: A 24-year-old driver was killed after his Nissan lorry plunged into a ravine at Km 29 Jalan Kunak-Lahad Datu yesterday.

Distric police chief Superintendent Mohd Nassaruddin M. Nasir said Abu Bakar Bin Ja’an was killed on the spot due to serious head injuries.

It is learnt that the victim was heading to Kunak from Lahad Datu when the incident occurred about 5.30am.

“Initial police investigation found that the victim had lost control of his vehicle while negotiating a corner and skidded before plunging into the ravine.

“The driver was thrown out of his lorry and landed about 10 meters from the lorry causing him serious injuries,” said Nassaruddin yesterday.

He added the deceased had been sent to the district hospital for a post-mortem before being claimed by his family.

The case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In Sandakan, a 43-year-old pillion rider succumbed to her injuries after the motorcycle she was riding collided with a jeep on Tuesday.

According to district police chief ACP Mohd Azhar bin Hamin, the woman died at the scene in the incident that happened around 7.38pm at the Sandakan-Beluran bypass.

Road users who witnessed the incident are urged to come forward to the nearest police station or call Inspector Rodi Anak Wong at 089-242 254 to facilitate investigations.

Mohd Azhar said the case would be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
