KUCHING: It might have been desperation that pushed a man to drive against the flow of the traffic during a police operation at Jalan Tun Patinggi Abdul Rahman Yakub here early yesterday.

According to Kuching District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai, the driver could have spotted the roadblock ahead and attempted to escape it by turning back and driving against the traffic flow.

However, his car skidded from the road and crashed into Haji Abang Kipali roundabout nearby.

“We have detained the driver and seized his car. Based on initial report by my men, he tested positive for drugs. He has been referred to the Narcotics Division of Kuching District police headquarters,” said Abang Ahmad.

It is learned that the man is in his 20s.

The roadblock under Ops Bersepadu ran from 1am to 5am during which police personnel conducted checks on 38 motorcycles and 84 individuals – 10 of whom are women. All motorcycles were confiscated and brought to Gita Police Station for verification of whether they matched any record of motorcycles reported missing.

Abang Ahmad said during the operation, 50 summonses for various traffic offences were issued.
