MIRI: Government funding has been secured to repair and upgrade the Long Terawan road this year.

Mulu assemblyman Datuk Gerawat Gala, who is also State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker, said the Public Works Department (JKR) and Miri Resident’s office would call for a tender to repair the road next week.

“As an elected representative for the area, I have done the following above in my effort to ease the hardship of our people in Long Terawan, Long Win and Long Bangan, who are dependent on this road,” he said in response to claims nothing was being done to improve conditions.

He explained that the logging road was built by a timber company, which has since ceased operating in the area.

“Once the contract is awarded the successful contractor will proceed with the road repairs. I wish to assure our people in Long Terawan, Long Win, and Long Bangan that I am doing my best to look after their welfare and to assist them,” he said, adding that the road’s future maintenance would come under JKR.

He stressed that the upgrading of former logging roads costs hundreds of millions of ringgit, and would be carried out in phases.
