SIBU: The Sibu Division Rugby Union (SDRU) has introduced a new format for Sibu 10-a-side Bro Albinus Rugby Challenge Cup Tournament to be held here in August.

According to SDRU chief coach Michael Ting, the third edition

of the championship would be divided into two categories – Junior (for schools) and Open categories.

Ting said the new format is aimed at popularising as well as to encourage more youngsters to get involved in the sport.

“This will provide the momentum for the junior development programme which prepares young players for Sukma,” he explained.

Ting said entry forms would be sent to all the schools that have rugby teams, notably in Kuching, Mukah and Bintulu.

The past two editions attracted 12 teams each from throughout the state.

This year, he is expecting at least 12 teams in the open category and from eight to 10 teams in the junior category.

For the record, Sibu Swan won the tournament’s first edition, but lost the title to Sibu Swallow last year.

Meanwhile, rugby enthusiast Dato Sri Bartholomew Wong recently chipped in for SDRU to organise the Bro Albinus Cup.

Wong will also sponsor all the trophies and cash prizes.

SDRU chairman Anthony Ting received the cheque on behalf of the association.
