Damaged stretch of Miri-Bintulu road needs urgent repair

Only half of the damaged stretch is passable to traffic.

MIRI: The relevant authorities are urged to immediately repair a stretch of the Miri-Bintulu road at KM25 near Bukit Song, which has collapsed due to a rain-triggered landslide yesterday.

However, heavy vehicles are reminded to refrain from using the road as the ground is very unstable.

Miri Divisional JKR engineer Chong Chi Fam said the stretch in question is the Pan Borneo package WPC 11 from Lambir to Pujut.

“The road has been handed over to the Lebuhraya Borneo Utara Sdn Bhd (LBU) for the construction of Pan Borneo Highway.

“Instructions have been given to LBU to take immediate action to repair the stretch.

“The immediate action to be taken shall include traffic management and widening the road shoulder.

“Work is ongoing and road users are advised to use the coastal highway instead,” said Chong, adding that water supply under the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) to Bekenu area was disconnected due to the incident.

Meanwhile, deputy police chief here Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said that no casualties were reported in the landslide and advised users to use the coastal highway as an alternative route until further notice.

Officers from the Fire and Rescue Department have gone to the scene to investigate.
