Robbers get 12 years’ jail, one stroke of the rotan each

KUCHING: The Sessions Court here yesterday sentenced two friends to 12 years in prison and one stroke of the rotan each for committing robbery two years ago.

Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad found Nazariman Bujang and Muhammad Nezri Azizi Sebawi guilty and convicted them under Section 395 of the Penal Code.

She also ordered for their custodial sentence to take effect from the date of their arrest on March 17, 2015.

A day prior they robbed a man of his motorcycle, which was parked by the roadside at Jalan Bintawa around 2.30pm.

The two friends were originally discharged and acquitted of the charge without entering their defence.

An appeal by the prosecution against the decision was allowed by the High Court and the two accused were ordered to enter their defence.

Yesterday, the court released them on RM5,000 cash bail each after their application for a stay of execution pending appeal was allowed.

DPP Haresh Prakash had told the court that both the accused were previously convicted under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt on March 16, 2015 to a senior citizen.

They were each sentenced to three years in jail and two strokes of the rotan after pleading guilty to the charge.

A video of the two men bullying and assaulting the senior citizen recorded by passers-by had gone viral on social media at the time.
