A multitude of children’s books at the fair.

MIRI: The Education Clubhouse (PACTS) is holding a book fair of 20,000 used books from the USA, of which 80 per cent are priced at RM7.90 and below per book.

Members of the public are invited to the fair and check out the thousands of titles.

The fair opens from 9am – 7pm from May 12 to 28 and admission is free.

According to organiser Larry Siah, PACTS is aware that early literacy propels a child towards academic excellence.

To encourage children to read more, PACTS is organising a children’s book fair in its Clubhouse.

Siah quoted international literacy consultant Mem Fox that ‘reading aloud a minimum of three stories a day to children can wipe out illiteracy within one generation’.

Other bonus benefits of reading to children are to instill emotional intimacy between parent and child, children get

an early headstart in education and children spend less time on TV and video games, explained Siah.

For those who do not know about PACTS, here is a brief introduction:

PACTS – The Education Clubhouse is the first multi-intelligence education centre in Miri, Sarawak.

Established in January this year, PACTS functions as a Resource Centre for homeschoolers, with the unique concept of a ‘Clubhouse’ providing a hub for various skilled enrichment programmes.

The centre is located at Brighton Road, directly opposite Parkcity Everly Hotel.

PACTS is the acronym for the centre’s mission statement: P for Partnership with Parents and Children, A – Academic Excellence, C – Character Development, T – Technology in Learning, and S – Service Learning.

Apart from being a learning centre for homeschoolers, PACTS welcomes students from conventional schools who can register for its after-school enrichment programmes which include Robotics, Carpentry, Aviation Lesson, Cooking, Music, Sports, Leadership and Speech, Art and Drama.

Classes are kept small so each student is ensured of personal attention.

The emphasis is not just academic but character building through practice and team activities.

Children also learn about vegetable cultivation through hydroponics, where they learn to grow their own veggies.
