KUCHING: It was a good day for Sarawak football on Thursday as their teams registered wins in the President’s Cup and Youth Cup competitions.

Mohd Nazri Daud scored the only goal against Kedah in the President’s Cup Group A match at the Stadium Negeri in Petra Jaya. It was also Sarawak’s third win in a row.

Sulaiman Mustanir’s boys are now seventh in the standings, with 14 points from three wins, five draws and five defeats as Kedah remained on top with 26 points.

Both teams had chances of scoring but Nazri, coming on from the bench, headed the ball into the back of the net in the 85th minute to give the homesters the much needed win.

“We played well and luck was on our side,” said Sulaiman who praised the defenders for their good work in warding off the attacks from the opponents.

“There is still much room for improvement in the squad to ensure that we maintain our momentum in the coming matches,” he added.

Sarawak will next play JDT III away at Pasir Gudang Municipal Stadium in Johor next Monday (May 22).

Meanwhile, at Penang State Stadium, Safri Amit’s Youth Cup squad went on a rampage to beat the home team 4-2 and powered them to third in Group A standings with 22 points from six wins, four draws and three losses.

Sarawak opened account as early as in the third minute through Shahle Yusoff while Penang replied through a penalty kick in the 24th minute through Zharif Yazin.

Six minutes later, Rivaldo Adrill put Sarawak 2-1 ahead before Muaz Zainal Abidin equalised in the 41st minute.

In the second half, Sarawak dominated the game and in the 53rd minute, Amirul Iqmal etched his name on the scoresheet for the visitors.

Adif Salim rounded up the victory for Sarawak with the fourth goal in the 78th minute.

Sarawak’s next match is against JDT IV at UiTM Skudai Mini Stadium tomorrow (May 21).
