KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg has approved a piece of land adjacent to the current site of the Kuching Sikh Temple at Jalan Masjid here for expansion works.

The land, strategically located behind the temple, will be where the state government was going to implement a major development plan.

He made this announcement during the Vaisakhi Celebration 2017 organised by the Sarawak Sikh Temple Association at the temple here today.

Abang Johari said he had also approved a piece of land in Batu Kitang near here for the Sikh community to conduct cremations.

“You can still maintain this (Kuching Sikh Temple) as your heritage site as it is strategic and tourists can come for a visit.”

The Chief Minister said he could not divulge the “major development plan” in the area yet.

Earlier, Sarawak Sikh Temple Association president Dr Kalwinder Singh Khaira said the Kuching Sikh Temple was over 100 years old.

“We have been here for 100 years and we have to plan for the next 100 years. ”

Among those present were Abang Johari’s wife Datin Amar Dato Juma’ani Tuanku Bujang, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Datuk Bandar of Kuching City North Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai.
