KUALA BERANG: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) outlines four security measures to avoid becoming a victim of Ransomware WannaCry cyber virus attack.

Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said individual users, primarily, should always check and update their devices to the latest system and install the latest anti-virus or malware detectors.

“I am sure that most agencies and companies have cyber security filtration system in place, while for individual users, it is not something that is being emphasised, it does not matter either on a computer or smart phone… if there is anti-virus software installed, it will act as a filter for any threat of cyber attacks.

“Besides, we must keep all the important data in the external hard drive, pendrive or cloud system so that when there is occurrence of virus attack, we have the backup… and the last step is we do not arbitrarily open and ‘like’ any unsolicited links that we do not know its origin as it will cause problems later on,” he said.

He was speaking to reporters during a get together with educators in Hulu Terengganu programme here yesterday.

He added that MCMC was on standby to boost its defence system against the attack, following Ransomware WannaCry virus attacks that swept the world since Friday and the latest discovery of similar virus Uiwix in China.

As of now, the ministry had yet to receive any official statement regarding the attack of the virus in the country as stated in a local newspaper on May 17, he said.

“An online newspaper reported about virus attack at an academic institution in the country… and the case has been referred to CyberSecurity Malaysia, an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and not to MCMC. However, we have instructed them to monitor the situation regularly and if any attack is being reported, I have no problem in sharing it with the public.”— Bernama
