MIRI: Rural students must inculcate a high desire to study and excel in their academic pursuits while enjoying the quality moments at school.

Without enthusiasm in studying, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said, the students would only view school as a place for  formal education.

“School is not just an institution for you to receive formal education as it also serves as the starting point for you to chart your future life. So, develop yourselves with positive attitude towards studying which will promise you bright future prospect.

“If you don’t like your student life or what you’re doing now at this age, you might never succeed and you’re certainly not going to be happy in your life,” he said when officiating at SMK K9 Long Bedian’s Annual Sport Meet 2017 at Long Bedian, Ulu Baram recently.

Dennis admitted that success in life or the effort to obtain good grade in school exams were very hard to achieve and it could be frustrating but it’s worth it.

“Ultimately you make the choice and in the end you either pay for your choice or reap the rewards of your choice. You can have a good time but if you do that at the expense of your future, you will pay for it.

“The government has spent so much money every year to ensure you can attend school. So please do not disappoint your parent, family and those who have chipped in effort for your education.”

At the same time, he also wanted the students to be actively involved in co-curricular activities.

“It is important for you to put your focus on academic but at the same time, you have to balance it with co-curricular activities. That is why sport and other co-curricular activities are held in the school as part of the learning process which will help to develop you physically and mentally.”

Also present were the school headmaster Jenggo Jau, Long Bedian sub-district officer Ezra Uda and the headman of Long Bedian village Usung Wan.
