MIRI: Orang Ulu women are advised not to shy away from social activities organised by their own or other communities.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau made this call at the inaugural Orang Ulu Closed Women Badminton Competition held here recently.

He said involvement in such activities would help them adapt to rapid changes due to development and globalisation, and not be left behind.

“Gone are the days where the women are just staying at home, because in this era, things have evolved and everybody should be out there getting the best out of their life and enhance their knowledge, involve with social activities, make more friends and exchange ideas and, most importantly, do recreational activities to keep one healthy,” he added.

A total of 36 players from Lawas, Bintulu, Marudi and Miri took part in the two-day tournament sponsored by Dennis who is optimistic that it will be held again next year.

Part of the objective of the event – to get active participation from Orang Ulu women – was evidently achieved.

Organising chairperson Roslind Ajeng said they received such an overwhelming response that most entries had to be turned away due to time constraint. So she is planning for a bigger tournament in 2018.
