KUCHING: A police officer was captured last night after he went on the run following the fatal shooting of a woman at her home at Kampung Kakai in Serian yesterday.

State Police Commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor confirmed to The Borneo Post last night that the suspect was caught at 9.35pm in the vicinity of Emart in Matang without any untoward incident, and will be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

He also confirmed that the suspect holds the rank of inspector and is the current Belaga district Management Department chief.

“Initial investigation indicated the incident happened around 3.15pm at Kampung Kakai in Serian. The police officer just went in (the victim’s room) and shot the lady once,” he said, adding the victim died on the spot.

Mazlan also said based on official police record, the inspector was not married to the deceased as mentioned in viral postings on social media.

“As far as we are concerned, they are boyfriend-girlfriend. Our official record shows that he is divorced, although we will have to check if he had secretly married the woman.”

Calling the incident as a ‘clear-cut’ murder case, the State Police Commissioner said police will be probing the personal details of the suspect and victim in a bid to get a clearer picture of what led to the killing.

It was learned that Mazlan is scheduled to hold a press conference on the matter in Miri today.
