KUCHING: Police have launched a murder investigation after a local man was killed in an assault at Jalan Datuk Abang Abdul Rahim here early yesterday morning.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said the victim, identified as Shamsul Hipni, 41, was pronounced dead by paramedics as a result of head injuries caused by being struck with a sharp object.

According to him, initial police investigation showed that the victim, who is from Bandar Baru Semariang, had engaged in an argument with a group outside a nearby entertainment outlet which then led to a fight.

The victim was chased some 300 metres across the road by the group, numbering around 10 men, and was allegedly attacked with sharp weapons.

“The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, and efforts to locate and arrest those responsible are on-going,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Meanwhile, a witness of the initial incident, who declined to be identified, said the incident happened around 2am.

“At the time, I saw a man being chased by a group of men from the entertainment outlet. I felt uneasy and decided to search for the victim within the vicinity of the premises, and found him lying on the road behind the alley of a commercial block across the street,” he said.
