MIRI: Police records show that the suspect in the murder of a woman at Kampung Kakai, Serian on Sunday was a divorcee.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the police’s initial investigation revealed that the motive was personal.

“The victim is said to be the suspect’s girlfriend when the shooting took place but when arrested, it was learnt that they were married.

“However, the marriage was not declared and therefore the suspect is still a divorcee in our records, unless he can prove he was married and has a verified marriage certificate with the victim,” Mazlan told a press conference here yesterday.

When asked whether the suspect was allowed to carry the pistol believed to have been used in the shooting, Mazlan said the suspect had been on official travel from Belaga to Kuching.

“He was allowed for safety purposes because of his long distance movement from Belaga to Kuching to attend the meeting,” he said.

He added that the suspect was supposed to go back to Belaga as soon as the meeting ended on Sunday.

The suspect was arrested in Matang, Kuching around 9.35pm on Sunday to facilitate the police investigation.

Yesterday, Magistrate Marutin Pagan allowed the seven-day remand application made by the investigating officer for the 36-year-old suspect in the Kota Samarahan magistrates’ court.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
