Bursa Malaysia closes lower on selling pressure

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia ended broadly lower yesterday on selling pressure across the board, led by blue chips Petronas Gas and IHH Healthcare, dealers said.

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) ended at an intraday low of 1,767.17, down 7.78 points from Monday’s close of 1,774.95.

After opening 0.63 of-a-point higher at 1,775.58, the index moved between 1,767.17 and 1,777.08 throughout the day.

Market breadth was negative, with losers thumping gainers 637 to 292 with 366 counters unchanged, 454 untraded and 21 others suspended.

Volume decreased to 2.91 billion units, valued at RM2.80 billion, from the 4.10 billion units, valued at RM2.95 billion, traded on Monday.

A dealer said the local bourse was subdued despite higher crude oil prices which stayed above US$51 a barrel.

Asian shares closed mixed on Tuesday  as investors digested the report on a deadly explosion, believed to be a terror attack at a concert venue in Manchester, England, as well as, uncertainties and lingering turmoil in the US administration.

For heavyweights, Public Bank gained four sen to RM20.14, Sime Darby added one sen to RM9.32 while Maybank, TNB and Petronas Chemicals were flat at RM9.35, RM13.80 and RM7.35, respectively.

Of actives, Iskandar Waterfront added 14 sen to RM1.81, AirAsia X improved half-a-sen to 53.5 sen, Luster Industries eased half-a-sen to 15 sen while Netx Holdings and Borneo Oil were flat at seven sen and 19 sen, respectively.

Among the top losers, British American Tobacco and Fraser & Neave slipped 80 sen each to RM44.20 and RM24.60 respectively,  Dutch Lady fell 76 sen to RM58.10 and Petronas Gas shed 62 sen to RM19.18.

The FBM Emas Index fell 74.36 points to 12,666.36, the FBMT 100 Index slipped 70.79 points to 12,286.56 and the FBM 70 dropped 150.03 points to 15,240.44.

The FBM Emas Shariah Index lost 81.92 points to 12,990.23 and the FBM Ace shed 5.58 points to 6,593.49.

Sector-wise, the Plantation Index was down 25.04 points to 8,046.84, the Industrial Index decreased 22.90 points to 3,271.44 while the Finance Index fell 57.81 points to 16,323.78.

Main Market turnover decreased to 1.96 billion units, worth RM2.63 billion, from 2.45 billion units, worth RM2.74 billion, registered on Monday.

Volume on the ACE Market slipped to 634.58 billion units, worth RM128.41 million, from  1.23  billion units valued at RM154.88 million.

Warrants fell to 320.04 million units, valued at RM43.15 million, from Monday’s 412.03 million units worth RM54.09 million.

Consumer products accounted for 79.66 million shares traded on the Main Market, industrial products (510.19 million), construction (139.40 million), trade and services (668.95 million), technology (88.04 million), infrastructure (5.83 million), SPAC (3.86 million), finance (76.62 million), hotels (3.45 million), properties (353.08 million), plantations (18.15 million), mining (70,100), REITs (8.40 million), and closed/fund (100).
