The fire leaves 12 residents homeless.

KAPIT: Siblings Saban Bujang and Bawang Bujang both lost their double-storey wooden houses at Sungai Pelajau, Bukit Goram, which were built less than a metre apart, to a fire on Monday.

The fire is believed to have started when a car, parked at one of the houses, somehow exploded and burst into flames.

The Fire and Rescue Department received a call just before 4pm.

A total of 10 firefighters in two fire engines were deployed to the scene. Very low water pressure hampered efforts to extinguish the fire, but firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading to other houses nearby.

In total the fire left 12 residents homeless.

Welfare Department officer Peter Gabong and his officers were at the scene to render immediate assistance.

The Malaysian Red Crescent Kapit chapter also presented RM300 and clothes to each family, while the Lions Club of Kapit and Kiong Seng General Store presented food aid.
