KUALA LUMPUR: As many as 61 per cent of the 12,926 sexual crime cases reported over the past three years involved children, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.

She said this situation was serious as the children would grow up with negative psychological effects.

“The ministry will work closely with the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to tackle the issue of domestic violence and child abuse and play our part in rehabilitating the victims so that they can continue with their lives as normal as possible, if not better,” she said.

Speaking to reporters after the closing ceremony of a leadership course for senior female police officers here today, Rohani she said PDRM statistics had also showed an increase in the number of domestic violence cases to 5,796 last year compared to 5,014 in 2015.

Meanwhile, Rohani also said she hoped the PDRM could achieve its target of 30 percent senior female police officers at the decision-making level with the rank of Police Superintendent and above.

“Increasing the number of female police officers by 15 percent in three years is one of the seven aspirations for the female police service in the country,” she said. – Bernama
