SIBU: Mintonette Old Bones Club (MOB) edged Wheel Track Tyres (WTT) 3-1 to win the Sibu Closed Volleyball Championship concluded at Sibu Volleyball Stadium on Wednesday night.

MOB, spearheaded by former national player Pang Sie Chuong, took more than two hours to subdue stubborn WTT, which was also powered by several veteran state and national spikers.

MOB lost the first set 17-25 but levelled the game after winning the second set 25-18.

In the third game, it was point for point when at 23-23, MOB moved ahead to take two consecutive points to win the game at 25-23 before advancing to take the fourth game at 25-12.

Yu Chai Diesel (YCD) won the bronze medal after staging a comeback to beat Weltrac Auto Service (WAS) 3-2 in another marathon playoff. WAS took the first two sets at 25-23, 25-17 before YCD overcame a slow start to take the third and fourth sets at 25-12, 29-27 and rallied on to win the decider 15-6.

A total of 14 teams took part in the championship. The other teams were IPD Sibu A, IPD Sibu B, Cocktail Rangers, WheelTrakTyres, Medic Sibhu, PSKPP Sibu and Sibu Volleyball Clubs.

Meanwhile, SMK Tung Hua defeated IPD Sibu to lift the Ladies’ title. Lanang was third, followed by Medic Sibu.

Sibu Volleyball Association (Sava) president Dr William Ting Wei Ung, speaking at the closing ceremony, expressed satisfaction over the progress of the competition.

He added that Sibu Closed is a good venue to promote the sport as the championship had not been organised since 2008. He said Sava took the initiative to revive the event in the hope that it would continue to attract younger generations.

“We are happy that so many teams have participated in the championship and this will definitely augur well for the development of the sport.”

With such an encouraging number of entries, Ting said they are planning to organise the event annually.

He said most of the players had expressed their interest to take part in the championship again.

“With the interest generated, we are confident that it will push the sport towards a new frontier in time to come,” he added.
