Private companies, GLCs urged to repair build houses for the poor and homeless

JELI: Government linked companies (GLC) and private companies are urged to repair or build new houses for the poor who need a conducive place to stay.

International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said though the government had initiated specific programmes to build houses for the poor, the numbers poor people who need houses is still big.

“Therefore, through contributions from GLC and private companies, we can expedite the distribution of houses to the homeless and poor,” he told reporters after opening the Kelantan level Tenaga Nasional Berhad’s Baiti Jannati 2017 appreciation programme, here yesterday.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) through the Baiti Jannati programme contributed 15 houses to 15 poor people in Kelantan.

Mustapa who is also Jeli member of parliament said the cooperation between the government, corporate sector and non governmental organisations had been fruitful in implementing various programmes to assist the poor, homeless and the needy, including those who lost their houses during major floods in 2014 or fire.

Meanwhile, TNB Kelantan general manger Datuk Md Yuslan Md Yusof said the 15 houses were part of the 20 houses contributed by TNB to Kelantan under the programme while five more would be completed in time for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations next month.

He said each house cost about RM50,000 each. — Bernama
